Software companies want to make programs faster and cheaper. New tools use computer smarts to help with coding, testing, and managing projects. This makes work easier for developers, saves time and money, and helps companies create better software more quickly.
Maintaining old software is tricky. Changes to core functions can cause unexpected problems in other parts of the system. It's safer to create new functions than to alter existing ones. Thorough testing is crucial, but complete coverage is impossible. Careful consideration is key.
A government website launch failed badly, costing a fortune. A small team of skilled programmers later fixed it for a fraction of the cost, highlighting the inefficiency of large, bureaucratic software development. Their success contradicts common project management approaches.
Software development time is tricky to predict. A simple method uses an initial estimate, then applies a multiplier to account for unforeseen issues and complexities. The final estimate considers best, most likely, and worst-case scenarios.
Fixed-price software development is problematic. Accurately predicting scope, schedule, and cost upfront is nearly impossible. Even with a perfect scope, estimates are rough. The skills of the development team greatly impact the outcome. A better approach is needed.
